James Vines' parents cannot be proved at this time. Katie (Vines) Coker (as passed on to her by a grandson of James and Katie) has told me (via e-mail) that her family has reported that James also went by James Wood. She also says that James' mother was Lavina (Lavinia) Vines, the daughter of Isaiah Bradford and Elizabeth (Smith) Vines. The story goes that Lavina has relations with or was married to a Mr. Wood. They also say that James was reared by his grandparents. I have seen reference to a marriage to a Mr. Wood on rootsweb.com which would help support this story. My problem is that there is no sources for validation. There is an entry in the 1880 census for Carroll County for a widow names Elizabeth Vines (I believe this to be Isaiah's wife) who has one James Wood (grandson) living with her.
If James was illegitimate, I could see keeping the Vines name. But why did Elizabeth use Wood on the 1880 census.
If Lavina and Mr. Wood were married, then why use the Vines surname.
Further research is needed for validation.

Another family member states that James was reared by Jethro and Ciculia Watson Jones. Gives us another avenue to research for James.

I believe this to be the same Peter in the 1910 census because Frank, Rosa, and George are on both censuses, although the birth dates don't match other information available for Frank and George.
